Cinematic camerawork highlights the action well in most situations. From Kratos’ ashy complexion to enormous mechanical snakes slithering though snowy mountains, I stopped and marveled at the visuals several times. They all look great, too, thanks to stellar production values. Towering creatures, massive structures, and brutal deaths punctuate the adventure from beginning to end. In terms of spectacle, Ascension holds the same note from God of War III. Though Kratos lacks the compelling purpose that drove him forward in other entries, he’s still full of epic exploits. The result is a story that has players chasing artifacts and fighting bad guys with no investment in the outcome. Its main contribution is emphasizing that Kratos misses his family and is sorry that he killed them, which is well-worn material at this point. Kratos pushing his daughter away in Elysium and battling his brother Deimos helped players see a different side of the character. In a prequel, the challenge is to craft a tale that enriches the events that players have already seen – something Ready at Dawn’s handheld God of War titles did exceptionally well. Series fans know how the story ends: Kratos wins, breaks his bond, and eventually kills Ares. This puts him at odds with the Furies, creatures charged with enforcing oaths. Set 10 years before the first entry, Kratos is on a quest to free himself from the bond of Ares. ![]() In areas where fans expect a new entry to move forward – like narrative and combat – Ascension either stalls or steps backward. The list goes on, but even though Sony’s Santa Monica Studio included the key elements, it doesn’t mean they are executed up to the series’ high standards. Pinpointing where Ascension goes wrong is difficult, because it has all of the components a God of War title should. After years of dominance, God of War: Ascension is the series’ stumble that could allow the competition to close the gap. Other games took cues from God of War, but each new installment raised the bar even higher, putting more distance between Kratos and his rivals. Kratos outpaced his peers by such a wide margin that measuring up to his bloody rampage seemed impossible. When I reviewed the original God of War back in 2005, I remember feeling sorry for other action games. ![]() 7/31/2023 0 Comments Invisible guest![]() ![]() Viewers who take Goodman’s advice to focus on the details will have figured out the ending after the first half hour, but that will only matter when the final scene arrives and fails to make its impact: Guest‘s destination may be too clearly signaled, but getting there makes for an exciting ride. Lennie, Wagener and Coronado all dominate Casas in their scenes with him. But we’re not made to care - though the performances, from some of Spain’s strongest talent, are very strong. It would be a nice bonus if we could care about the characters with all our attention focused on the events. Despite its impressive economy - basically, it’s all about four characters - It loses its grip on plausibility over the final half hour, in rapidly unfolding scenes that in retrospect fall apart. If both The Body and The Invisible Guest can be criticized, it’s because they both feel a little too chilly, too obvious in their construction, and too keen to excite: A couple of twists fewer would not have hurt and would have left more in reserve for the big finale. Because a last-minute witness is threatening to show up at the soon-to-start trial with damning new evidence, they have three hours, as Goodman’s stopwatch literally clicks away, to come up with a defense - the Spanish title, meaning setback, translates literally as “against time.” And Goodman actually doesn’t believe a word of Doria’s blackmail story.Īn alternative version by Doria slowly emerges. The game of fastpitch softball is similar to baseball, and includes stealing bases and bunting. It is always best to find a gap rather than hit it right at the defensive players. ![]() It is always better to hit a line drive than a ground ball, especially as the defensive game gets more competitive. There is never really an apparent reason to hit a fly ball, the best case scenario would be to foul it off out of play in a battle at the plate. A pop up’s launch angle is anything greater than 50°. Fly balls are typically what a home run is made of. Fly balls come off the bat at a launch angle of 25-50° and these are good for power hitters. These launch angles are best for slap hitters or contact hitters, and a line drive is better than a ground ball. The launch angle for a ground ball is anything less than 10° while a line drive is 10-25°. An important technique to remember about hitting is the launch angle that the ball takes off of the bat at contact. They will have a helmet and a bat made out of a specific composite material based on the hitter’s preference and contact styles. Hitters will approach the plate based on a very thought out line up assigned by the coach. Hitting is also an important aspect of softball. The catcher is the brains of the team, and carries it as a whole. Catchers are responsible for throwing runners out when they try to steal bases, meaning that a catcher must have a strong arm and a quick throw. This is due to the proximity of the batters to the catcher. Catchers are protected by a chest guard, helmet, mouth guard, leg protectors, and a specialized mitt. Catchers can also "frame" pitches by pulling the ball towards the center of the plate to convince the umpires to call the pitch a strike. If there is a bad pitch that hits the ground, the catcher needs to block it so runs do not score, and runners do not advance on the bases. ![]() The catcher needs to be able to recognize the batters, their hitting style, and the right pitches to call. Without a fast-paced catcher, the pitcher will not succeed. These pitches can be taught in many different styles, depending on the pitching coach's method and the player's abilities.Ĭatching is also a very important part of fast pitch softball. There are many different pitches which can be thrown, including a two-seam fastball, four-seam fastball, changeup, two different riseballs, two dropballs, curveball, offspeed, screwball, knuckleball and more. With this style, the ball is not brought over the head at all but down and behind the body and back in one smooth motion tracing out a figure eight. Another type of pitching movement is the "figure 8". A "modified" fast pitch is identical to a "windmill" pitch except the arm is not brought over the head in a full windmill motion, but instead is brought behind the body and is then thrust directly forward for the release. The pitcher then brings the ball in a circular motion over the head, completes the circle back down at the hip, and snaps the hand. A common way to be taught how to pitch is using the motions, 'repel', 'rock', 'kick', 'drag', 'toss'. In this style of pitching, the pitcher begins with the arm at the hip. Pitchers in fast-pitch softball usually throw the ball using a "windmill" type of movement. The pitching style of fastpitch is different from that of slowpitch softball. Monica Abbott set this record while playing with the Chicago Bandits in June of 2012. Pitchers throw the ball with an underhand motion at speeds up to 77 miles per hour (124 km/h) for women. It is the form which will be used in the American Women's Professional Fastpitch league, a women's professional league whose inaugural season began in June 2022. The fastpitch style is also used in college softball and other international competition. It will not be a part of the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. Softball was on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) program in 1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2020. It is the format played at the Olympic Games. While the teams are most often segregated by sex, coed fast-pitch leagues also exist.įastpitch is considered the most competitive form of softball. The pitching circle, seen here at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, is a required part of ASA and ISF fastpitch softball.įastpitch softball, also known as fastpitch or fastball, is a form of softball played by both women and men. ![]() 7/30/2023 0 Comments Atlas flight control system![]() Although this phenomenon was a mystery at the time, it was resolved during the flight of Mercury Atlas 7 when Scott Carpenter accidentally tapped the wall of the spacecraft with his hand, releasing many of the so-called "fire flies". The balloon experiment failed when it did not properly inflate on deployment, but the liquid experiment behaved as anticipated.Ī curious event which occurred during Glenn's (MA-6) flight was his report of "fire flies" when he entered the sunrise portion of an orbit. The other was a device to study the behavior of liquid in a weightless state. One was a balloon, deployed and inflated to measure drag and provide visibility data. To compensate for this the spacecraft was allowed to drift in attitude for an additional 77 minutes beyond the time already built into the flight plan. During the flight there was also concern about excessive fuel usage resulting from extensive use of the high-thrust controls and the inadvertant use of two control systems simultaneously. A random failure of the circuitry associated with the pitch horizon scanner, which provided a reference point to the attitude gyros, occurred. Originally scheduled for launch in early May, the mission was thrice postponed, once (07 May) due to checkout problems with the Atlas launch vehicle, once (17 May) to perform modifications to the altitude-sensing instrumentation in the parachute-deployment system, and finally (19 May) due to detected irregularities in the temperature control device on a heater in the Atlas flight control system.ĭuring the flight only one critical component malfunction was encountered. to: (1) evaluate the performance of a man-spacecraft system in a three-orbit mission (2) evaluate the effects of space flight on the astronaut (3) obtain the astronaut's opinions on the operational suitability of the spacecraft systems (4) evaluate the performance of spacecraft systems replaced or modified as a result of previous missions and, (5) exercise and evaluate further the performance of the Mercury Worldwide Network. The objectives of MA-7 were similar to MA-6, i.e. Scott Carpenter after a medical examination of Slayton revealed an irregularity in his heartbeat. The pilot was originally planned to be Donald K. Mercury Atlas 7 (MA-7, also designated Aurora 7) was the second orbital flight of an American rocket with a human on board. ![]() |
